Must Bol is looking for YOU

What is Must bol?

Must bol, is a youth led campaign against gender based violence. Its a call to young people to speak out  and act against violence that they experience, witness or participate in..(www.mustbol.in)

How did it start?

 The Must Bol campaign was started by CYC in 2010. Commutiny- The Youth Collective (CYC) is a collective of independent professionals from diverse fields( www.commutiny.in). We have been working since 2008 to strengthen the ecosystem for youth development and citizenship in India ;

·       We saw Social media  emerge as a popular ‘hang out’ for young people to talk to each other and exchange more and more audio visual materials, we saw an opportunity to connect with these spaces and skills young people to make meaningful conversations and lead change.

·     With the rise in alarming incidents of gender based violence from Delhi and across the country we felt the urge to facilitate a process that supports young people to recognise how gender impacts their lives and beliefs and actions and invite them to challenge the same.

·      We also felt there was need for a common space for where people across gender identities – women, men and trans-people, can come together safely to talk and act together.

Thus was born Must Bol......

35 youth campaigners came together to take up intense personal exploration to understand GBV, created 50 films to converse with over 3000 people on ground and over 30000 people online, through film screenings, flash mobs, online discussions, facilitated interactions, writing and joining public demonstrations.

Dipping into their  personal experiences and reaching out to many other young people, they created a space for discussing and learning to deal with issues like - Violence in intimate relationships, gender stereotypes, notions of masculinity, street sexual violence and body image issues .

As they campaigned, they collaborated with other 30 youth groups, campaigns, online forums from across the country to learn more and to widen the reach to young people.

Why young people?

At CYC, Our collective  experience of  working with young people across the country  has shown that  more often than not, young people  get pre occupied  in four spaces that society legitimizes for the. These are 1)  Family, 2) Education/ career 3) Friends and  4)  Leisure which includes entertainment, worship and sports among others.

There is one very  vibrant space  although quite marginalised  that young people also occupy, which we call the 5th Space. In this 5th Space young people engage on a  journey from self to society. This space is often where young people volunteer  on social issues that bother them.  It's a space young people co- own and trust; where set the principles and can let their hair down without being judged. It's a space young people learn through experience about themselves, their relationships and the world they live in. Most importantly, it's a space where young people  internalize attitudes, behaviors and skills that nourish the other four spaces.

Commutiny - The Youth Collective in partnership with Pravah advocates for the creation and  sustenance of  this  5th Space in diverse youth contexts.

Must bol continues this year.....How will we go about it?

Must Bol is geared to enter Phase 2 , this September... inviting more young people into the leadership and the campaign fold. This is how we propose to go about it

Do you want to join Must Bol?
We are looking for young people willing to take ownership and lead the campaign action. Campaigners get the exciting opportunity to learn from experts in the field of Youth development, Gender and Film making. They get an opportunity to design and lead a national campaign on GBV issues reaching out to a diverse set of young people. A DVD of the films and other materials created by young people during the campaign will get international exposure and circulation. Overall the Campaign promises an experience rich in fun, diverse learning and transformation as a leader. We expect sustained engagement and commitment for a full year, along with an openness to learning and to work with different people. The campaign is suited to work with students and is sensitive to their other commitments
